EU adopts new digital privacy rules: what changes for users and companies
The European Parliament and the Council of the EU on Tuesday adopted a package of digital privacy rules that tightens the conditions for tracking users online and transferring personal data outside the Union. The rules apply from 2027 and also cover companies outside the EU that offer services to EU users.
The package, which the Commission calls the Digital Privacy Act, supplements the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and replaces the 2009 cookie rules. The biggest change concerns consent: platforms will no longer be allowed to make access to content conditional on accepting tracking, and refusing must be as simple as accepting.
